Keeping an up to date license plate is a requirement to stay legal on the road. Checking your plate sticker should be the first step of the renewal process. From there, you will have to check with your state to see how often you will have to renew. To complete the renewal process, there are a few steps you should be abiding by.

Research How Often You Need to Renew

Different states have different requirements. Some states require you to renew annually on your birthday or within that month. However, some states have multi-year renewals that depend on the date of initial registration. Dont assume that all areas follow the same rules. If you have recently moved to a new state, find out how often you would need to register and renew your car and its tags.

In most cases, you can find a renewal date on the registration card itself. Most of the cards will give you all of the relevant information you will need to renew on time and accurately.

Registration Renewal Fees

License plate renewals require you pay fees. Based on license plate type and class coding, it can be different depending on the car being driven. Again, checking your registration card is the easiest way to find out how much you would need to pay. Keep in mind, if you happen to renew you license plate after the deadline, you will incur additional fees.

Renewal Grace Period

If you forget to renew your car registration, many states offer a grace period to renew your tags without added fees. It can differ from state to state. Some states give you only a few days past the final date to renew, while some can give up to one month. Take care to know what your state provides, as some dont have a grace period at all.
